The Painting
Demonstration
Jenny is
painting a complete painting, and showing the techniques that will be
covered during the course including sketching, preparing the paper,
colour selection, the initial under-painting and the final touches.
Saturday
10.30 am
Over To Us -
We Start Painting
Jenny is
showing us a series of wet-into-wet exercises to break the ice and to
help us understand some of the wonders of watercolour. The
exercises are then used in a very simple wet-into-wet painting. This is
fun!
Saturday
12.30 pm - Lunch Break
Our Art
Supply Shop
During lunch
is a good time to purchase supplies from the Art Supply Shop - a feature
of every Jenny Macnaughton Watercolour Workshop. It is open right
through the Workshop and is stocked with brushes, palettes, paper and
paper blocks, paint and many other items useful to a watercolour
painter. Prices are pegged to those at the Art Scene at West Ryde,
Sydney, who supply the stock.
Saturday
1.30 pm
After lunch,
Back To Work
Jenny has
sketched up a simple landscape and we are all following along after her.
New techniques are being introduced and Jenny is circulating around the
room providing helpful advice. Jenny uses a remote microphone so that
her comments can be heard by all.
Sunday
9.00 am
Colour
Theory
Jenny has
started the day with an explanation of why some colour combinations work
better. This leads into a subject that we all have problems with,
perspective when sketching. This all leads naturally into the next
painting. Our confidence is growing.
Sunday
9.45 pm
Back to
Painting
As
confidence grows, so does the complexity of the painting. This painting
requires perspective skills and various watercolour application
techniques. It looks daunting but with Jenny's tuition, it is really
quite easy! Jenny keeps stressing that she is not trying to teach us to
paint like she does. It is important to recognise that the techniques
and methods she is showing us can be worked into our own natural style.
After all, our own style is the sum total of our own natural ability and
all that we have learned.
Sunday
2.00 pm
The Final
Painting - Flowers
Jenny is
providing us with a short demonstration. It is great fun splashing on
the bright colours in a fast, fresh and free manner. On this occasion
the group is doing its own thing, but under the careful eye of Jenny.
It
is 4.00 pm and the Workshop is over. Jenny has driven us hard and we
all have a bunch of paintings and copious notes to take away. Jenny has
stressed that it is all up to us now.
She has been talking about the importance of "brush mileage" - meaning
that we all need to practice the techniques and paint as many paintings
as we can so we can grow in confidence. This will allow our very own,
unique style to come through.
